My son has this problem occasionally with his goldendoodle--she has long, semi curly, black hair so it's difficult to see a tick when it attaches. Whenever he finds one on her he grabs his flat-ended tweezers, lifts the ticks body so he can see the exact point of attachment, and making sure to get the tweezers clear down to the point of attachment, he grabs the tick and pulls it off. In every case the head came off with the tick. I keep an antibiotic roller around all the time with 15 drops each of on guard, oregano, and frankincense, plus FCO to fill a 5 mL roller, and that's what we use on the places after removing the tick. But you could just use on guard.
-- Some people have commented in other groups that using a drop of purify on the tick will cause it to back out, rather than using tweezers.
As a preventative I made a spray bottle (8 oz) with probably 6 to 8 drops each of TerraShield, Purify, and rosemary, plus water to fill. Now when he takes his pup to the wooded areas by the lake he shakes the bottle first, then sprays her fur--mostly a little around the ears, and joint spaces (armpits, etc., where ticks like to hide), but also he sprays a little on one hand, rubs his hands together and strokes it on her chin and a little on her face.
Now, this is a situation where we don't have ticks at home, so it's occasional and he can spray her before he takes her for walks in the woods. It sounds like a similar situation to your friend's experience.
Good luck!
Liz
