To clarify the ice/contrast therapy listed above; it's no more than 20 minutes of ice EVER; to do more can cause tissue damage. For the contrast, apply heat for half the the time that you apply the ice, i.e. 20 minutes of ice followed by 10 minutes of heat, and repeat for a couple of rounds ending with heat to keep the connective tissue pliable.
Once he's cleared find a good, clinical massage therapist to work with those paraspinal muscles. I hope his recovery is swift!
