[Everything doTERRA] Re: severe autism

Howdy!

I assume your friend is already very self-educated in many aspects of autism, so if I say something that she already knows, please ask her to forgive me.

There are three very good resources that I use myself and I regularly send people to:

Anything/everything by Temple Grandin, including the movie biography
Anything by Dr. Edward Hallowell, especially the book Delivered from Distraction (I mention this because attention deficit is almost always implicit in autism)
Autism Discussion Page on Facebook (This man has the most profound insight into the autistic brain I've ever seen in anyone not actually on the spectrum himself.)

This is my own personal experience with oils, autism, and attention deficit:

Some of us who are on the spectrum are not so much "moody" as we feel everything on an extreme level. For example, I tell people I'm not even a normal weirdo, because I'm female and have the "H". (It's twice as common in men as it is in women. LOL!) So I explain that I was born with my adrenalin in permanent overdrive. What this often means is my nervous system is almost always in fight-or-flight mode. Even when I'm having fun. Extremely annoying. I used to actually have these "talks" with myself, because I was supposed to be having fun, but my body was either wanting to smack something or run away.

Trust me, if I could find the switch and turn it off, I would. LOL!

Point is, what some people take for moodiness is actually the nervous system in sensory overload, and it makes us go into fight-or-flight mode.

If your friend can make her son understand that she understands that, preferably in a calm moment, that will be huge, because her son will feel safe. Then, she can practice coping mechanisms with him, show him that it's OK to say, "Hey, I need a minute. BRB." Then he can just escape to a quiet place until the reaction calms down. The oils will be an invaluable tool for that.

For me and three of my four children who are like me, the oils have helped in a HUGE way with that anxiety. I can't even begin to emphasize how much they have helped. That, in turn, has allowed me to focus a little better. I won't lie: I still take Ritalin. The oils are sufficient as long as I have a previously made detailed list of everything I want to get done. And, I literally will NOT take it when I need a lot of "energy". But if it's something that requires cognitive skills like algebra or History (we home school), then we need the Ritalin, not only for sustained focus but also because without it, our retention rate is extremely low.

Another area where the difference has been huge is sleep. I can now sleep, for the first time in my entire life, without benefit of medications like Flexoril. Until I started using oils, sleep was an acquired skill for me, and I wasn't very good at it, either.

With regard to depression, or anything else mood-related, in my own personal case and that of my kids, my experience has been that our moods - whatever they are - tend to be extreme. There is nothing mild about anything we do. It's exhausting for us sometimes, too, you know. But, ultimately, I am happy with what I am, and have gotten happier with the passage of time as I learn more and more about what makes our brains tick. It's not a bad thing, and we are in the company of some pretty amazing people, like Edison, Einstein and Mozart, just to name a few.

I sincerely hope and pray something here will help your friend. It's a world of information. It's a journey. But it can have a happy-ever-after now rather than later.

My friend sent me this email.  Her sone with severe autism is 16.  He has never even been able to speak.  If anyone could help to know a protocol to start that would be wonderful!

My son has been on 3 different anti-depressive/psychotic medications over the last 7? years. nothing has truly worked. so now he is no longer taking them due to ineffectiveness. he is so moody and can get quite aggressive. as you know he is already a big kid at 6'3" and we are desperate for some changes in his behavior! (he missed 3 days of school last week due to his irritability) anyway...i have turned to his oils..balance and serenity  (I sent her these years ago). i feel like they have helped somewhat but want to experiment with more.  I repeat....i am so desperate.  our kids are so afraid of him when he is upset. it s very dramatic and i truly need something to help him. also, my friend who has an autistic son has the same issues and we feel so helpless. (he weighs 240)  perhaps it is our trial to endure this but i do not want to go back to more meds..esp.since he is non-verbal and cannot tell me how he is feeling. They' re ineffective and especially if they are $$$..have to take him to a specialist/psychiatrist...he sometimes is required to have certain procedures when on certain meds (ekg was one of them...hello!  he d have to be sedated just to have one so we are looking at a big expense and time factor, etc..sheesh) blah blah blah! sooooo....what should i do?
signed,
desperate in montana

If anyone could help I would so appreciate it!
