Hi Miki. I'm sorry to hear you lost one of your pets. Since cats are so sensitive to oils, I'll leave those recommendations to more those more experienced using oils. Using repellant ones may only cause her to relocate the behavior elsewhere.

First, I'd take her to the vet to rule out anything physical or get any physical causes treated. After that, cleaning the soiled area and reducing her anxiety are the big things. I've had cats for a great many years and they can exhibit some behavioral issues as they try to adjust to the change in dynamics and sense of loss when their friend disappeared. They may try to reassure themselves by marking their territory, making sure it smells like "their" house.

Until the issue is resolved, keep her litter box especially clean, so she doesn't have that excuse. If you can find Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat ''Cat Attract'' Cat Litter, try mixing some of that with her regular litter. It has a special attractant herb or herbal blend that helps get them to use their box.

Anxiety reduction –

Punishing her will only increase her anxiety. Reassure her that she's not going to disappear too by giving her lots of loving in ways she enjoys. There is a commercial pheromone product called Feliway, which can help reduce anxiety. If she peeing on the area of the couch where her buddy used to lie or where you usually sit, after cleaning you might try putting her bed or something that has her scent on it on the area she's using.

Clean –

You'll need to remove traces of odor that may attract her again. Dry up any fresh urine with paper towels. There are a number of good odor removal products – Nature's Miracle, Zero Odor (I think it's better, but needs to be ordered online), OxyClean. A few years ago I bought the "Stinky Pets" recipe online. The company seems to be out of business as their website is not functioning, so I guess I can share it.

In a glass jar or bowl, mix:

16 oz. (2 cups) hydrogen peroxide (3% only, not stronger)

2 tsp. baking soda

2 small drops liquid dishwashing soap (Dawn, Palmolive, etc.)

Gently stir--do not beat or shake--until baking soda is dissolved. Do not store the mixture in an airtight container, as oxygen is released and pressure will build up. The solution is best used fresh as it loses potency after about an hour. If you're concerned about fabric color, test in an inconspicuous spot first. Spray or pour mixture over urine spot, making sure to cover the entire spot. Allow mixture to completely soak the area being treated. Since your couch has absorbed the urine into the cushions, you may need to pour it on. Do not rub or scrub.  Let sit for 24 hours without disturbing. After 24 hours, take clean paper towels or a clean, white washcloth and blot up any remaining liquid (Again, do not rub or scrub). Allow area to air dry completely. If there's still some odor, repeat the process (may need to do this 2-3xs).

There are more detailed directions, if you want them, email me privately at dramee88@gmail.com. Good luck, Dee
