Hi everyone. I am new to using essential oils and am loving it. I do have a question for anyone out there who might have some insight to my question. I will preface this question by stating I will not hold anyone liable for the advise they give because most people are so afraid to approach this topic. I am desperately trying to find a natural alternative to help (not cure) my son when he has complications from Hemophilia. As of right now, he has a bleed in his knee that I have to give Factor 8 to help stop the internal bleed. My concern and question is this: What oils will help the pain, swelling and bleed. Where I get concerned is that even some things in nature can be "blood thinners." I happen to need a "blood clotter" and one that won't keep feeding blood( when I see the word warming, I get concerned) to a certain area. Is there anyone out there that would PLEASE address this and help me on this journey? I seem to only run into brick walls. Thank You.

I am sorry I don't have any answers for you, but I am an RN who worked for 15 years in pediatric private duty nursing, and in my current job I have just been given my first hemophiliac patient (a child) who I have to start an IV on to give him his Factor injection. I am also a doTerra wellness advocate, so I've been researching this. There isn't much out there (as I'm sure you've already discovered) but these are some general guidelines I have come up with, and with the support of his mom, we are cautiously going to try some. Oils to AVOID: (considered "hot" oils) - cinnamon, clove, clary sage, marjoram, oregano, bay laurel, birch, wintergreen, and pretty much all the citrus oils. Oils I am thinking might be OK: at the top of the list, I would try helichrysum because it is used in first aid to stop bleeding and I have used it myself successfully for this purpose. Also, any of the calming oils like lavender, geranium, chamomile, and frankincense (the king of all oils). If your child has sensitive skin, I think I would stick with diffusing the oils in the air for starters or, if you want to try them topically, dilute them with fractionated coconut oil. I'd be careful with blends. Make sure you know every oil that is in it. doTERRA's deep blue rub, for example, is one of my favorite products for swelling and pain, but I'd be VERY cautious about trying it on a hemophiliac child because it has wintergreen and camphor in it and I am not sure how those stimulants would affect him, even though they are anti-inflammatory.
ReplyDeleteI notice that the date of your post is January, 2014 and as I am writing this comment, it is December, 2014. So I hope you have already discovered some oils that have helped your son. If so, I would very much like to hear about your experience with them as I am hoping to offer some suggestions and relief to another family in similar circumstances.
