[Everything doTERRA] Re: peppermint question

I love the oils, but there can sometimes be contraindications, though usually waaay less than any pharmacueticals. Often times Wikipedia has a reference to a study etc. See if you can find that and do some more research from there.

I had not heard of this concern, but I do know that peppermint can have a muscle relaxant affect for some and for this reason can sometimes cause heartburn instead of helping it. I am one of these people. No peppermint internally for me which has been a bummer. This is a site I've used to reference that issue and now looking at it again I see it also mentions the issue with infants. But I still didn't see any reference to a study regarding the issue with babies ...  Maybe look on PubMed or the new aromaticsciences website. However, you may not find much. There are not usually studies with children. http://umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/herb/peppermint

Someone asked me whether it's true that peppermint oil can cause respiratory arrest in children. I'd never heard of such a concern. Wikipedia has this statement:

"Due to the menthol constituent, topical use of peppermint oil around the facial or chest areas of infants and young children, especially around the nose, can induce apnea, laryngeal and bronchial spasm, acute respiratory distress with cyanosis, or respiratory arrest."

I was wondering if there is any truth to it?

Thanks
