I asked doTERRA about it, and got this answer:
The ingredients in doTERRA personal care products have been shown to be safe for topical use by reputable and independent research and medical organizations. Each ingredient used in doTERRA personal care products is carefully selected after careful review of clinical data including information provided by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review is an independent auditing body established in 1976 by the industry trade association Personal Care Products Council (formerly the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association), with the support of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Consumer Federation of America. (More information on the Cosmetic Ingredient Review is available at http://www.cir-safety.org). doTERRA personal care products can be used with confidence and safety by all members of a family as directed on product labels.
The ingredient listed in your email is perfectly safe and is included in the product to improve performance. There are a host of websites you can visit that will condemn most ingredients that are approved for use in the personal care industry. Some of these sites are legitimate, but others lack credibility and promote information that lacks scientific evidence or in many cases sound logic. We will continue to follow the guidelines listed below which may or may not line up with every opinion out there on the web.
