[Everything doTERRA] Possible reaction to Breathe

My friends husband has a deviated septum and wanted to try Breathe to see if it would help. (they are skeptical about EO's)  For the first couple nights he would put a drop on his hands and then smell them, he said he wasn't feeling much of a difference so he put it on his feet last night and went to bed.  My friend said he woke up gasping for air and couldn't breath and now they are scared to use it again.  Does anyone know of anything happening like this?  Or a reason why it would happen?  Any advise would be much appreciated so I can try to calm them down about it.
