I did 4 sports and marching band--never had shin splints.  I was an assistant athletic trainer as well and this was the exercise I recommend.  I did a stretch that is very simple and WORKS.  Several times a day do this exercise:
Lay on your back with your knees curled into your chest and hands gripping the thighs.  Draw outward circles with your toes 10 times, then inward circles with your toes 10 times, then point and flex 10 times.  REPEAT until you can't do it anymore.  Make sure you work the full range of your flexibility.  It should burn really bad and depending on the shape you are in you may or may not be able to complete it 10 times.  If you can't complete a full 10, drop it back to 8 or 5 reps each and continue.  This stretch really works.  I agree with the oil recommendations too.

Lemongrass, Wintergreen, Myrrh, Cypress, Helichrysm in FCO.  My sympathies. I hope she can keep off her feet for a week or so to really heal up. That is so painful.  Perhaps Deep Blue Rub would help the pain.  Haven't tried it yet.
