Draxe.com (Dr. Axe) has a DIY recipe PDF (attached) off of his website, which includes. 
I have not tried nor used yet.  
Before I found EOs, I used Coconut Oil before my hiking or kayaking activities. 
For simplicity, I just started adding a couple drops of Lavendar to the 1 Tbl Coconut Oil. 
I have not had to use any after sun exposure stuff, but Dr. Axe has one in the PDF file.

Before I knew about EOs, I used Dr. Mercola's sunscreen lotion (a tad expensive), 
for longer exposure, after a couple of hours.

Most commercial have chemicals and metals and junk.  
Biggest clean, non-harmful sunscreen ingredient is:  Active Ingredients: Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide

Dr. Mercola's:
  • Nourishes, protects, and moisturizes your skin.
  • Helps reduce skin damage from the sun.
  • Offers you protection from sunburn.
  • FREE of parabens (harsh chemical preservatives
  • Natural Sunscreen is water resistant and hypoallergenic
 Ingredients
Inactive Ingredients: Deionized Water, Sunflower Oil, Lecithin, Coconut Oil, Glycerine, Xanthan Gum, Green Tea Extract, Jojoba Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A), Shea Butter, Eucalyptus Oil. Active Ingredients: Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide.

Dr. Axe: 
Homemade Sunscreen
Total Time: 20-30 minutes Serves: 10
INGREDIENTS:
10 drops lavender
1 tbsp pomegranate oil
3/4 C coconut oil
2 tbsp Zinc Oxide
2 tbsp shea butter
Glass Jar

DIRECTIONS:
1. Combine all ingredients except zinc oxide in a jar.
2. Place a saucepan with 2 inches of water on stove over
medium/low heat.
3. Place jar in saucepan and stir contents until ingredients
start to melt.
4. Once all ingredients are combined, add in zinc oxide
and stir well. Store in a cool place.

John,
I just saw your post about before and after sun protection recipes. I would be interested in these as I have not been using sun screen for near ten years now. I do burn on occasion but as others have said I try to avoid the sun. I had such bad alergic reactions to sun screen years ago that I stopped using it.
