My step mum is also allergic to the sun. She has a reaction when going in the sun within a few days of eating certain foods. Unfortunately for her there are a lot of foods that cause it - all citrus, most herbs, alcohol, many fruits and vegetables and various other things. Your friend needs to find out the foods that cause it and eliminate them. The oils may make it worse, if the oils are ones that he is allergic to, unfortunately.
