Re: [Everything doTERRA] Re: Dog ear infections

i prefer to use basil on my dogs ears. We use it for about 3-7 days 2 times per day when ever they get infected he is a mix of Pitbull and lab and has big druppy ears. I like the advice about if the your pet dont like it dont put it on them he loves basil and would eat the leaves if I let him.

There is a book called aromatherapy for animals by bell that has great info and discusses it.
Basically melaleuca is not recommended because of two things, controlling the dose and tendency for adverse reaction with repeated application.
In my opinion the correct dose of melaleuca would be to take a toothpick and touch the tip to the top of the white part on the bottle, not to dip it in so a dot the size of a pin head for a large dog. So you can see that is very hard to control so I believe it is safer to use other oils. Melaleuca is a very powerful oil.
What I've seen, 3drops of melaleuca put a Sheltie in ER overnight, almost died and a huge vet bill. Careful application of a tiny amount repeated a couple of times had dog exhibiting signs of toxicity. Most dogs will run at the smell of it. When a pet runs from it don't apply it.

Gin, why do you say not to use melaleuca on dogs? I have a cocker spaniel with chronic ear infections and have occasionally used diluted melaleuca and purify swabbed on his ear. But I recently changed his dog food to one the pet store recommended for this issue and am already seeing improvements.
