You have either transferred makeup of something from you skin or you the end of the container which sometimes can have precious residue from the oils. If you don't wear makeup and are sure it is not from your skin then call doTerra a request a replacement.
Of course the oils cannot go rancid! They have found oil in tombs that have been in urns for thousands of years that were still viable.
