I have read that the body has stopped making it's own pain fighters so it can take up to 6 months for the body to kick back in.

After our bodies have been on any pain killer for an extended length of time it becomes a physical addiction.  Tapering off very slowly may be her best best.  Such as taking 1 1/2 pills a day for a month and then 1 and so on.  I have had the opportunity to see many cases in which the person on the meds had to taper off very slowly as there was a physical addiction to the meds.  And during the tapering off process the pain can actually get worse before it gets better.
