I have frequent tension headaches too and found out the cause was due to strains on my shoulders and neck. I have to apply the oils on my shoulders, shoulder blades, (sometimes upper spine) and back of neck to get relief of tension headaches. I rub the oils onto the area where the strain or pain is, sometimes asking my husband to help massage the pain areas helped greatly.
You can test if your husband is having shoulder or neck strains by pressing or kneading the above mentioned areas, if he feels any pain, there is a strain or tight muscle there.
The oils i use can be Deep Blue, Deep blue rub, Aromatouch or Past Tense, layered with peppermint.
