I have done a LOT of research on using oils on animals and rarely does
anyone highly recommend melaleuca. It is completely toxic to cats (as
are many essential oils) and should be used very carefully with dogs.
If using with dogs it should be a small part of a blend and/or well
diluted.
I don't know what about the melaleuca is supposed to deter lice. If it
is the smell, niaouli is much more gentle. For a similar range of
action, try marjoram.
My guess is that the recommended insecticide bath and weekly
application is to kill the lice and the nits since its probably not
practical to comb the animals out with those super fine tooth combs
that get any eggs.
I wonder if getting the dogs shaved down is an option that wouldn't
ruin their coats, but allow combing as you would on a person that has
gotten lice.
I can't imagine how frantic I would be if this happened to my pet. I
feel so bad for them.
